Corfu: A Vacation under the Greek Sun and a Stop in Thessaloniki

A memorable journey to the emerald island of Greece, with a history-filled stop in Thessaloniki. Discover the charm of the Ionian Sea and the vibrant atmosphere of Macedonia.

There are places that stay in your soul from the very first sight, and Corfu is undoubtedly one of them. The "Emerald Island," as it is nicknamed, welcomed us with an irresistible mix of turquoise sea, lush vegetation, and that Greek hospitality that makes you feel immediately at home. But our journey wasn't just about the final destination; it was about the entire adventure of the road traveled together with the family.

Road trip through the Greek mountains

We decided to make this trip by car, a choice that allowed us to enjoy every landscape and turn the long drive into a series of beautiful moments. Crossing Bulgaria was just the "warm-up" for the spectacle that followed on the Egnatia Odos highway in Greece. The dozens of tunnels piercing the mountains and the suspended viaducts offer landscapes of fascinating wildness, making driving a true pleasure.

An essential stop was in Thessaloniki, the heart of Macedonia, where we spent a night full of discoveries. This city has a special energy – a blend of millennial history and modern life that captivates you instantly.

The magic of the ferry crossing

One of the most anticipated moments, especially for the children, was boarding the ferry in Igoumenitsa. There is something truly magical about the moment you leave the mainland:

  • The salty breeze brushing your face
  • The seagulls accompanying the ship in a spectacular dance
  • The feeling of pure freedom that only the sea can offer

The hour-and-a-half crossing passed in a heartbeat, being the perfect prelude to the island atmosphere that awaited us.

Corfu: Where history meets the sea

Once on the island, we let ourselves be carried away by the charm of the streets in Kerkira (the old town). With architecture reminiscent of Venice, laundry hanging from windows, and aromas of kumquat and fresh fish, Corfu gave us exactly the escape we were looking for. We discovered picturesque villages, hidden bays where the water has unreal colors, and gathered precious memories under the warm Greek sun.

Below I have detailed our little adventures in Thessaloniki, the place that prepared our spirit for the island's beauty. I hope it inspires you to set off on your own journey!
