Thessaloniki: Arch of Galerius - Triumphal arch in the heart of the city

Thessaloniki: The Arch of Galerius (Kamara), an impressive monument that tells the story of Roman power in the heart of the city.

On our walk through Thessaloniki, we couldn't miss one of the most popular meeting spots for locals, which is at the same time a historical monument of colossal importance: the Arch of Galerius, known to everyone as Kamara.

An Imperial Triumphal Arch

Built at the beginning of the 4th century to celebrate the victory of Roman Emperor Galerius over the Persians, the arch was originally part of an impressive complex that also included the Rotunda. Even though only part of the original structure remains today, the details carved in stone are truly fascinating. We spent many minutes admiring the bas-reliefs depicting battle scenes, elephants, and imperial figures, all telling of the former glory of the Roman Empire.

The Heart of the Student City

What makes Kamara a special place is how history integrates into everyday life. Located near the university, the area is always full of young people. It is the classic meeting point ("see you at Kamara!"), offering a vibrant contrast between the millennial ruins and the energy of the present. We really enjoyed sitting for a few moments on the edge of the monument, observing the city's hustle and bustle and the blend of cultures and eras.
