Our experience visiting the Pantheon and why seeing the light dance through the oculus is a must-see Roman experience.
If there's one building in Rome that makes you feel the true weight of history, it's the Pantheon. Walking through those massive bronze doors and looking up at the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome is an experience that stays with you forever.
The Magic of the Oculus
The 9-meter opening at the center, the oculus, is the only source of light. We were lucky enough to be there on a clear day, and watching the sunbeam slowly move across the perfectly preserved marble interior was hypnotic. It's a reminder of the incredible precision of ancient Roman engineers.
Tips for Your Visit
Keep in mind that since recently, you need a ticket to enter. We recommend booking a slot around noon to see the light at its most dramatic. Also, look closely at the floor—it's slightly sloped with tiny, almost invisible holes to drain the rainwater that comes through the oculus!
