Our personal tips for visiting the Colosseum: securing Arena access and why we chose a self-guided tour for our family of five.
Standing before the Colosseum, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. It's not just a monument; it's a testament to human ingenuity and the scale of ancient Rome. For our visit, we wanted more than just a view from the outside—we wanted to walk where the gladiators walked.
Securing Your Tickets
Booking in advance is absolutely critical. We managed to secure the entrance that includes the Arena floor, though it was quite difficult to catch as they sell out almost instantly. If you're aiming for the Underground segment, be prepared—it was practically impossible to find availability during our search.
Guided vs. Self-Guided
We ultimately opted for a self-guided visit. Guided tours are fantastic but can become very expensive, especially for a group of five like ours. Choosing the unguided path gave us the flexibility to move at our own pace, lingering in the spots that fascinated us most and skipping past areas more quickly when we wanted. For a family visit, that freedom was invaluable.
