Golubac Fortress: A Medieval Gem on the Danube

Golubac Fortress: A Medieval Gem on the Danube

A stunning medieval fortress on the banks of the Danube in Serbia, with breathtaking views, affordable entry prices, and a wonderful local restaurant nearby. A perfect few-hour escape.

On the Serbian bank of the Danube, just a few hours from the Romanian border, rises one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in the region — Golubac Fortress. I didn't know quite what to expect when we set off, but the sight left me speechless. The fortress looks like something out of a film, with its massive towers reflected in the slow-moving waters of the river and the limestone cliffs rising dramatically on all sides.

A visit takes a few good hours, during which you can explore the inner courtyards, walk along the ramparts, and take in the breathtaking panorama of the Danube and the surrounding mountains. Everything is well maintained, and the entrance fee is very reasonable — always a welcome bonus. The surrounding area is extraordinarily picturesque, with landscapes that take your breath away at every turn.

After a full circuit of the fortress, we found the perfect stop at Restoran Jorgovan, a nearby restaurant where we had a hearty, affordable meal — generous portions of authentic Serbian cuisine with genuine, home-style flavors. Golubac is one of those places that doesn't disappoint, in any way. If you're in the region, don't miss this hidden gem.
